Todo Mundo Nasce Artista by Aíla – Translation

YouTube Preview Image
The music from Pará with its carimbós and tecnobregas is the new black among hipsters in Brazil. The novelty is not that new for CAS listeners, we've being seasoning our shows with that peculiar way of playing the guitar for quite very long now. But while we are already in the search for new gems in other areas of Brazil, Pará is still providing us with nice surprises, such as Aíla. This song talks about how life suppress everyone's artistic vein since a very tender age, leaving life long traumas and scars that can only be cured by... ART.

Todo Mundo Nasce Artista
Aíla

Todo mundo nasce artista
Depois vem a repressão
Não faz arte, diz a tia
Vê se deixa de invenção

Todo mundo nasce artista
Depois vem a castração
E o artista que há em nós
Vai do quarto pro porão

Todo mundo nasce artista
Depois vem a podação
E a vida fica triste,
Sem arte, sem emoção

Todo mundo nasce artista
Depois vem a piração
Alcoolismo, suicído
Doença mental, depressão

E essa doença tem cura!
Existe uma salvação!
Faça arte! faça arte!
Mesmo que sua mãe diga que não

Everyone is Born an Artist
Aíla

Everyone is born an artist
Then comes repression
Don’t be naughty1, says your aunt
Knock it off2

Everyone is born an artist
Then comes castration
And the artist in us
Goes from the bedroom to the basement

Everyone is born an artist
Then comes pruning
And life becomes sad,
Without art, without emotion

Everyone is born an artist
Then comes craziness
Alcoholism, suicide
Mental illness, depression

And this disease has a cure!
There is salvation!
Make art! Make art!1
Even if your mother tells you not to

There are two great colloquial expressions in the song:
(1) Fazer arte
Literally: to make art
Colloquial expression: to be naughty, to be mischievous

(2) Deixar de invenção
First let’s see some of the meanings of the verb Deixar:
• To leave
o Paulo deixou o hotel há meia hora.
= Paulo left the hotel half an hour ago.

• To abandon
o Carla deixou o marido.
= Carla left her husband.

• To let, to allow (someone to do something)
o O professor deixou o aluno sair da aula mais cedo.
= The teacher let the student leave class early.

• To stop (doing something)
o José deixou de fumar há dois anos.
= José quit smoking two years ago.

o Deixe de insistência!
= Stop insisting!

Invenção: Literally, invention

Deixar de invenção
Colloquial expression: to knock it off; to give (an idea or behavior) up

Produzido para a rádio inglesa SOAS Radio - da University of London - e difundido para o mundo como podcast, o Caipirinha Appreciation Society oferece à sua audiência internacional duas horas de música brasileira pouco explorada pela mídia, de todos os estilos, regiões e períodos, de sambas clássicos a misturas modernas.

MdC Suingue (Portuguese for "Swing") founded the Caipirinha Appreciation Society in 2004, to show the world that there is a lot more to Brazilian music than what radio stations and record companies would have you believe. Kika Serra joined the CAS in 2006, when the show became a bi-national broadcast.
